10 Step Guide to Effective Strategic Planning

The following 10 step guide to Effective Strategic Planning is an effective tool to assist you in your development of strategic planning. This strategic planning process is dependent on someone/group taking responsibility and creating the energy needed to manage, operate and deliver not only the provision that comes with the responsibility of a LA but also consider the longer term impact  to which this provision can contribute.


STEP 1: What do I want to see achieved through CPD in three years time?  What will that look like? How will this contribute to other national and local agendas?

STEP 2: Audit: What is current provision like?
• How EFFECTIVE is it? What is the impact on learning and teaching standards?
• What is the QUALITY of PROVISION? - Its content and delivery
• How EFFICIENT is the provision operated and led?

STEP 3: What are the significant areas of strength and areas that require change if the longer-term vision is to be achieved?

STEP 4: Who are the key colleagues to celebrate and consult with? How will you ensure their commitment to both the vision and direction and ownership of development areas? Who are our potential strategic partners?

STEP 5: What are the critical improvement priorities? Create a three-year strategic plan with identified priority areas mapped across this time frame.  What do we want to achieve/improve?  Each area with significant annual milestone targets identified

STEP 6: Who are the best people to delegate and deploy responsibility for the effective implementation of the plans priority areas? 

STEP 7: What do we need to do? Create action plans that guide the direction and work of lead personnel.

STEP 8: Are we achieving what we set out to improve?  Implement robust monitoring, evaluation and review systems in place that assure reflection on provision
