What did you want to do?

  • Learn how to practice high quality everyday with all PE faculty members.
  • Transform what was being taught in PE into high quality.

What did you do?

  • Approached the Teacher Education Department at Loughborough University to be involved in a joint research programme about delivering high quality PE.
  • Used KS3 gymnastics as an example with the aim of finding out how well the school was teaching it and to seek the views of students.
  • The University came into school and interviewed staff and students.
  • The University developed a unit of work for the school to deliver that forced them to deliver high quality. The unit was state of the art and in sync with the Key Stage 3 Strategy, PESS Project and PESSCL Strategy.
  • Literacy was introduced into every lesson.
  • Teachers delivered the unit of work as an experiment and the University are analysing the results.
  • Two year 7 classes were taught with the new style of teaching and 1 class with the old style.
  • The University videoed lessons and wrote up reports.

What difference did this make?

  • All members of the faculty are forced to think high quality.
  • Teachers have been provided with improved and fresh ideas for teaching.
  • Informal lesson observations show improvements in student learning.
  • Teachers felt that they achieved more with the students.
